Meet Jarrett King Smith, the dedicated voice of the City of Takoma Park Maryland, Ward 5 community since July 2012. This young, up and coming champion of the people, settled in Takoma Park in 2004. A graduate of Howard University in 1993, now a four term Councilmember and President of the Maryland Municipal League, Montgomery County Chapter, Smith’s interest in politics and community participation is a product of an upbringing of parents and family who served the United States with distinguished careers in military and government. The son of an Army major, who was commissioned in 1967 and served 20 years as an Intelligence Officer with distinction having been awarded the Bronze Star (twice), a Silver Star and Legion of Merit, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi and was a Prince Hall initiate, Jarrett grew up with strong examples and an expectation of service and leadership, to family, to the community, to the country. Traveling to different parts of the United States and abroad provided Jarrett the opportunity to see the United States compared to other countries through the lens of service. He is a “natural born leader” with a demonstrated record of service to the Community with a focus on housing, transportation and the environment.

As a husband, brother and Friend of the People, Jarrett’s mantra of “Family First” leads him to prioritizing important issues for the greater good of Takoma Park’s Ward 5 and the entire City. He has been very successful in executing programs that directly impact his “care abouts.” This includes securing Federal funding for the Flower Avenue Green Street Project and other environmental initiatives, instituting a summer literacy program, food pantries, and supporting affordable housing and transportation access. Councilmember Smith has executed a management style driven by focused, active listening to all aspects and points of view of those he serves. He has an unrelenting tenacity to gauge everyone’s perspective.

In addition to serving as a Councilmember for the City of Takoma Park, Mr. Smith currently serves on several government and administrative bodies, which include:
•President, Maryland Municipal League (MML), Montgomery County Chapter. The MML is the association of Maryland’s Cities and Towns with the mission to strengthen and support municipal government through advocacy and development of effective leadership
• National League of Cities, Transportation Infrastructure Services Committee. Jarrett recently spoke at a forum sponsored by the Chair of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Task Forms at the Congressional Visitors Center
• Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) Human Services and Public Safety Policy Committee. The MWCOG’s membership is comprised of 300 elected officials from 22 local governments, Maryland and Virginia state legislatures, and U.S. Congress.

Through all of his accomplishments, and his priority focus on voter and civic engagement, fiscal responsibility, education, green communities, affordable housing and transportation, Jarrett Smith believes in Montgomery County’s progressive interests to be a strong leader for regional and national leadership.

An avid reader and sports enthusiast, Jarrett resides in Takoma Park with his wife.
